You've heard it before, shop local...but why? The holiday season is in full swing, Small Business Saturday is behind us, visitors will be rolling in soon, presents will be bought for friends and family, Santa has started crafting away with his elves. Shopping local is the answer this season and here are 8 reasons why:
Local businesses in Crested Butte are owned by people who care about and live in our mountain town community. Invest in us and we'll invest in you.
The moment you open our doors you're our friends. We'll see you around town, say hi, share stories, or maybe even buy you a coffee. At Chopwood we know the products, their purpose, and a little story behind each and every one.
A big focus of the OVPP (One Valley Prosperity Project) is to create and sustain well paying jobs that keep people in the Gunnison Valley long-term. With busier local shops comes a growth in the number of employees, creating a more livable wage to continue to thrive in our neighborhood.
A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
We have a devoted table (wagon actually) to local goods we have purchased. Everything is either from Gunnison or Crested Butte. This requires less transportation which equates to less congestion, pollution, and habitat loss. We also only sell brands that are environmentally friendly. With more USA made goods in our shop and Patagonia being our main inventory we oblige to care for our world, even if some believe it's a conspiracy theory.
Local competition encourages competitive pricing that in return guarantees the consumer to get the best bang for their buck. Innovation must maintain a constant as well. If a business wants to survive in Crested Butte (trust us) one must constantly be aware of what our community wants and needs from us.
Entrepreneurship fuels Colorado's economic innovation and prosperity. When you spend your dollars locally, you also help your neighbor pay their mortgage, keep the lights on, and food on the table. You're supporting their idea, passion, and lifestyle...which Karma always sees.
When you buy small, not from a multimillion dollar company, studies show that significantly more of your money is then put back into other local businesses, community farms, and Ma and Pa shops that stimulate the economic bases of your community. Supporting your community is supporting yourself.
Chopwood Mercantile appreciates your business, but we also view it in multiple currencies. Coming in our door, whether you purchase something or not, means that you are supporting our ideas, the local economy, and this big idea we have to make connections with one another.
